You can tell this is a high end area of town due to the shop fronts and the bag this woman is carrying. The people in this shot are also generally dressed smarter.This woman was quite diffident about telling me how much she had spent. Despite this she is openly displaying her bag whilst presenting quite introverted body language. View Larger

I have decided to concentrate on looking at women consumers.

  • Consumer culture plays a compensatory role for various tensions or disappointments in women’s lives.
  • Consumer culture seeks to triumphantly supplant the functions of the state (education and family) and position itself as the site of truth in regard to what it is to be a young woman today and to be recognised as such.
  • Consumer culture mobilises children to an ethic of gendered individualisation which is competitive, self-seeking and based on an ethic which seeks instant gratification through access to the world of goods.
